English National Ballet – 70th Anniversary Gala – London

★★★★   For those of us that have been involved with the company, no matter how small a part, it is clear that the ‘happy family’ that is English National Ballet, reveres and appreciates all who have been part of its 70 year existence.

Francesco Gabriele Frola in Le Corsaire.(c) Laurent Liotardo. (Click image for larger version)

English National Ballet – Le Corsaire – London

★★★★   It’s not the kind of work that will persuade anyone that ballet can be a subtle, nuanced and poetic art, but it is cracking entertainment and a treat in a dreary month.

English National Ballet in The Nutcracker.(c) Laurent Liotardo. (Click image for larger version)

English National Ballet – The Nutcracker – London

★★★   Having premiered in 2010, it is now two years’ past the median lifespan of an ENB Nutcracker and – despite many attributes – the show has reached its sell-by date.

MuzArts – Radio & Juliet, Faun, McGregor + Mugler – London

★★   There was certainly some spectacle and some good dancing, and not just from the big stars. However, the most heavily promoted piece and world premiere was an excruciating fifteen minutes of disappointment…

Svetlana Zakharova – Modanse: Gabrielle Chanel, Come un Respiro – London

★★★   Stunning images of Bolshoi ballerina Svetlana Zakahrova dressed as Coco Chanel whetted the appetite for the London Premiere of her latest how, Modanse.

ACE Dance and Music – Skin Reimagined: Blind Trip, Letlalo – London

★★   Blind Trip was longer than it deserved to be and mixed too many ideas to be compact and coherent, while Letlalo left me wanting more of the performance on stage but less of the filming going on beside me.

Alina Cojocaru in Cinderella.(c) Ian Gavan. (Click image for larger version)

English National Ballet – Cinderella – London

★★★★   A spectacular show, full of colour, humour and romance…

Carlos Acosta splendidly summed up as he collects his Critics’ Circle 青海福彩app官方下载 to the Arts award

I was at the recent Critics’ Circle lunch when Carlos Acosta won his latest award and was struck by Graham Watts citation – it seemed to splendidly sum up Carlos, both the man and his illustrious career… and why exactly we all admire him. BM, Ed.

English National Ballet – Manon – London

★★★★   The entire cast is committed to the MacMillan idea of everyone having their own character and story, and the result is a richly detailed picture of the conflicts between poverty and wealth, love and lust.

Memorable Performances of 2018 – London

Semperoper Ballett Dresden were another new visitor in the summer, with a programme of Forsythe works, some not seen here before. But Forsythe is a theme this year in himself.

Royal Ballet School – Summer Performance, ROH Main Stage – London

★★★   A matinee in two halves: fine before the interval, with dire, dreary choreography in the second half. Thank goodness for the exhilarating Grand Défilé at the close.
